New Warren Zevon Cover of “Don’t Let Us Get Sick”

I just put up a cover of a lovely song I heard for the first time this year. “Don’t Let Us Get Sick” by Warren Zevon is one of those simple songs that hits so deep. I’ve wanted to do a cover of this song for several months but hadn’t gotten around to it and was practicing last night during a thunderstorm and thought I’d give a video a try even though I wasn’t feeling particularly camera ready.

This was my first take – I tried a few more just for fun, but only spent an hour or so working on getting this right. I can get pretty caught up in trying to get the perfect take, or changing my outfit or recording harmonies and making things more difficult than they need to be. Most of my youtube videos from video recording to edit take up to 8 hours or more. I’m happy to have gotten this take on this night and to let the song and performance be simple and true. Plus, you just can’t beat that thunder in the second verse! Give it a listen. Lyrics are printed below:

Don’t Let Us Get Sick by Warren Zevon

Don’t let us get sick
Don’t let us get old
Don’t let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight
The sky was on fire
When I walked to the mill
To take up the slack in the line
I thought of my friends
And the troubles they’ve had
To keep me from thinking of mine
Don’t let us get sick
Don’t let us get old
Don’t let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight
The moon has a face
And it smiles on the lake
And causes the ripples in Time
I’m lucky to be here
With someone I like
Who maketh my spirit to shine
Don’t let us get sick
Don’t let us get old
Don’t let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight
